I’m 20 years old, 6 foot, less then 160 pounds, and I want to start working out, and besides my running I want to do some weight training. Whats a good weight of dumbbell I should be using to build muscle. Is 40lbs good?

Now my friend whom i train with in the gym ,is 23 (24 in April ) and has been training for nearly 12 years (started at the young age of 12).now he’s really strong for his age and always has been .he holds an impressive status of being 6ft tall ,17 stone of mostly muscle with 15 percent body fat.
At the age of just 17 he could bench press 3 plates each side (140 kilos).when he first started weight training, within a year he was bigger than everyone in his school including the older guys and even guys in college.
At the age he is now, he can dead lift 260 kilos, bench press 160 kilos and bicep curl a whopping 40 kilo dumbbell!
Now what amazes me about him is that he has NEVER taken a single protein shake. Never taken any creatine or any kind of muscle or strength enhancements .in fact even his diet is just simply what anyone else would eat. No regular protein at all. Yet he’s one of the strongest and biggest in the gym.
Now no one can make heads or tails of this .i mean we’ve obviously seen people thats bigger and stronger than him before but they have all had to take endless amounts of protein ,creatine and other supplements to get that big .
He’s done it with no assistance whatsoever.
By the time this guy was 15 he was bigger than a lot of the men in the gym.
So i was wondering if you could shed some light on this please.
And please only serious answers for a serious topic.
Thanks.

Well I’ve been dieting since July 26 (I’ve had a few weeks off) and I started at 217 and now 198… I eat 1 bowl of oatmeal in the morning 2 plates of grilled chicken and salad and another bowl of oatmeal at night (oatmeal is made with milk) I’ve been on this same exact diet since the beginning except when I first started I was doing cardio. Now When I was doing cardio I was losing 2.5-4 pounds a week and I only wanted to lose 2 and I also heard that weight training would help avoid loose skin so I stopped cardio and I started weight training. I started weight training (push-ups, ab crunches, and some dumbbell exercises) and I lost about 2.5 pounds in the 1st week. So to get down to only 2 pounds a week I decided to diet 6 days out the week instead of 7. When I did that I checked how much I weighed the next week and I lost 4.5 pounds! I went from 198 to 194.5 So for the next week I only dieted 5 days out the week checked and I was 196.5 then I checked the week after that and I’m now 198.. whats happening? I’m getting discouraged because everything has been going so well these past months and now it’s all messing up when I’m no where near my goal of reaching 170 lbs. Thanks for all the help! It will be greatly appreciated

I plan to begin weight training at home and I’m looking to buy a set of adjustable dumbbells and an exercise bench which can be adjusted to recline for workout purposes. I came across a gym poster which showed a guy using adjustable square dumbbells and I wonder if those are better than the regular ones… in addition, I only want to purchase a single set of dumbbells and the various weight plates to fit into it alone. Is that possible? Any suggestions? Thanks.
My storyy..
Ok so i am 18 years old i know almost everything about weight training..
i have been working out for like a year But i stop once in a while i have never reached my goal
i want to be about 170 pounds and ripped .. like heavy and ripped..
right now i weight about 150 and im about 5′8/5′7 … im starting a new page im going to work out hard
i tried diff kind of proteins but nothing gave me the results i want ..
protein # 1 that i have been told about .. it has carbs it has creatine in it and it has almost everything
and they say it makes u gain weight is weight fat ? or muscles becuz i dun want fat i just want muscles ..
protein # 2 it has like just 110 calories and alot and it helps u gain muscles im not to skiny
i can bench two plates . and i can do 55 dumbbell press..
and because i want good results the guy at the store told me to take the one that has creatine and stuff like that
but my friend told me to take his becuz his doesnt have alot of calories
so basically what im tryna say is they both have a point but i dont know wich one to buy ?
(please dont list any websites and dont tell me go to bodybuilding.com ..i already know it) …
